The CBA Co-op Experience
The Northeastern Co-op Program, founded nearly a century ago, is one of the largest and most innovative in the world. An integral component of the academic experience in the College of Business Administration (CBA), the Co-op Program is consistently ranked as the number one co-op/internship program in the country. As a student in the College of Business Administration, your co-op experiences will add depth to your classroom studies, provide exposure to career paths and opportunities, and enable you to develop the skills needed to be successful in today's global business environment.
Students in CBA have the opportunity to work in co-op positions at organizations that encompass all business functions across a diverse range of industries, sectors and locations. Students participate in at least two six-month co-ops, exploring opportunities with our more than 500 employer partners, located in over 25 states and around the world.
Through Co-op, you can develop:
- Extensive work experience
- An informed idea of the work environment you prefer
- Increased business insight
- A better understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses
- A stronger, more competitive resume
- A network of contacts in the professional world
How it works
Students participate in two or three six-month co-ops beginning in the middle or end of their sophomore year. Co-op cycles are January to June or July to December; students alternate school with co-op. Co-op experiences are expected to increase in degree of difficulty and responsibility and to have specific learning outcomes. Students may choose to do a third co-op, which is most likely to lead to a post-graduation job opportunity. While on co-op students will receive an evaluation from their employer, providing students with feedback on their professional performance.
Role of the Cooperative Education Coordinator
Students in CBA are supported by a Co-op coordinator who will work with them to educate and counsel on careers and skills necessary for success in the professional world. Your Co-op Faculty Coordinator will help you prepare for co-op and identify opportunities that match your goals and interests. Students are required to complete a one-credit course before beginning their first co-op experience. The course, Professional Development for Business, is taught by Co-op Faculty and covers areas including resume and interview preparation, career decision making and professional protocols. Co-op faculty work closely with students, not only in the classroom, but in one-on-one counseling throughout all aspects of the job search process. The co-op coordinator also works closely with employer partners in developing, enhancing and maintaining co-op positions that align with the educational goals of the college.
"Co-op has been one of the differentiating factors of my Northeastern experience... co-op has provided me the opportunity to develop my professional skills to a level where I am able to be successful in a corporate environment."
Tara Vogl, Class of 2008
