Research and Teaching Interests

Professor Hertenstein is actively engaged in three research streams: the impact of accounting information and expertise on new product development and new product success, accounting for capacity costs, and pedagogical strategies to enhance discussion teaching effectiveness, especially cold calling. Professor Hertenstein teaches management accounting and financial accounting primarily in MBA programs. She focuses on interpreting accounting information and using it in managerial decisions. Professor Hertenstein is an expert in case development, developing cases for her courses and publishing them in premier case and education journals.

Industry and Academic Experience

Prior to joining the College of Business Administration faculty in 1992, Professor Hertenstein served as an assistant professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and taught in management programs at Wellesley and Babson College. Professor Hertenstein has served as a consultant to numerous organizations, including Molex, Inc. Design Management Institute, British Petroleum, Bristol Meyers-Squibb, IBM, and General Electric. She has also held management positions in information technology with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in San Francisco.

Professional Services

Professor Hertenstein is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Institute of Management Accountants. She is also an active member of the editorial boards for The Case Research Journal, Business Case Journal, and Advances in Accounting Education.

Recent Press

Professor Hertenstein’s research in accounting and new product development has been recently cited in Fast Company, Product Development Best Practices Report, and Controller’s Cost and Profit Report. Her research in enhancing discussion teaching was featured in the faculty development newsletter The Teaching Professor.
