Finance involves the management and investment of money and other assets for a variety of businesses, governments, and individuals. Financial analysis often requires us to estimate the value of an asset and the risk associated with that value. The finance curriculum offers opportunities to develop specialized knowledge and skills in one or more areas such as corporate finance, investment management, management of financial institutions, insurance and risk management, and real estate.

    Research

The faculty of the Finance and Insurance Group engage in research projects that improve the quality of financial decision-making for managers, entrepreneurs and investors. They regularly publish their findings in leading academic and practitioner journals. Currently, faculty are researching issues including corporate governance, asset pricing, corporate renewal and portfolio performance. Students have the opportunity to participate in financial research through assistantships and directed studies. The Group also sponsors a series of research seminars during the academic year.

    Teaching expertise

Our emphasis in the classroom is on rigorous, relevant applied education. Our students have the opportunity to exploit Northeastern University's strong corporate partnerships through our highly ranked Co-op program. Co-op provides opportunities to work in finance-related positions at such firms as State Street Global Advisors, Fidelity Investments, Wellington Management Co., Microsoft Corp., and the FDIC. With this experience, students and faculty can create a more dynamic learning environment. For those looking for another way to apply what they are learning, we also sponsor two student-managed investment funds.

Please contact me or any of the other faculty in the Finance and Insurance area if we can provide additional information or assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Bolster
