Research and Teaching Interests

Professor McDonough’s research has focused on executing innovation strategies, managing global new product development, and managing global new product development teams. He is currently engaged in a global study whose aim is to learn about how companies can maximize the return on their innovation investment, the role a company’s innovation strategy plays in providing sustainable competitive advantage, and the capabilities that companies need in order to effectively execute their innovation strategy. Professor McDonough has already begun to collect data from companies in both developed and emerging economies including China, Taiwan, as well as US firms.

Industry and Academic Experience

Professor McDonough has been a visiting scholar in the R&D Research Unit of the Manchester Business School in England. He held administrative positions in two start-up companies prior to joining Northeastern in 1979 and has consulted with numerous companies on organizing and managing their new product development and innovation efforts. Some of the companies that Dr. McDonough has worked with include: Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Eastman Kodak, Corning, Phillips, Black & Decker, ITT Hartford, NYNEX, EG&G, Litton Industries, Northern Trust, Bay State Gas, Quebecor Providence Printing, Basic American Foods, Modine Manufacturing Corporation, New Pig, Sabanci Holding, Arcelik, Eczacibasi, and Akbank. Professor McDonough has conducted executive training and given speeches in China, Mexico, Turkey, France, Germany, England, The Netherlands, and the US on a variety of topics including, creating innovative organizations, speeding up the product development process, leading high performance new product development, leading transformational change, creating high performance new product development teams, managing the global product development process, improving the R&D/Manufacturing interface, effectively controlling new product development projects, and others.

Professional Services

Professor McDonough has served as the Vice President of Research for the Product Development & Management Association and was the President of the College of Technology and Engineering Management in The Institute of Management Sciences. He is a founding member of the Institute for Global Innovation Management (IGIM) at Northeastern University, a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Business Innovation and Research, and Department Editor for the People and Organizations and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.
